Abstract

The article analyzes the management of urban public transportation, specifically in relation to its existence under conditions of private or public management. It argues that private management of transportation implies a "reactive" type of management as opposed to an "active" management when the state, through local governments, fulfills this role. Various case studies related to the management of urban public transportation, both under private and public management, are examined, and the strengths and areas of opportunity of different management approaches are reflected upon from the theoretical principles of the New French Urban Sociology.
